About Karel Kuran

I was born in Eastern Czech Republic in the late 1970’s where I lived up until my late teens. I then moved to the US where my love for photography really developed; those were the days when I was using a 35mm film Canon camera.

With the digital age advancing I moved to a compact digital Nikon with underwater housing, which provided a whole new realm of photography to explore. In the early 2000’s, when the D-SLR Canon Rebel became available for a reasonable price, I didn’t hesitate to upgrade. By then I was living in Honduras, Central America which provided plenty of photographic opportunities. Back-packing through Central and South America in 2005 focused my interest on landscape and travel photography.

After this incredible 6 month journey I moved to the South West UK where I had the opportunity to teach basic underwater photography to SCUBA divers at my local dive centre. Not only was this a fun experience it also helped to improve my own photography skills. A permanent job, regular income and my parent’s kindness allowed me to upgrade to a Canon 40D D-SLR and allowed me to expand my equipment.

In 2008, my wife and I moved to Belize in Central America for a few years where I further expanded my photography skills and had a great time taking pictures of the stunning beauty of the Belizean wilderness, as well as documenting everyday life in this culturally diverse country.

After 2 incredible years we returned to South West England and I’m continuing to capture the beauty of this stunning part of the UK. I’m incredibly lucky to be able to shoot the ever changing seascape one day and the pure beauty of the Devon/Cornwall countryside the next.

I am a proud member of The Royal Photographic Society.

My work has been published in books and magazines over the last few years in different countries around the world.

My Olympic Torch image is a winning picture from the Amateur Photographer / BT Spirit of the Olympics competition. As a result of this competition the image has been published in London 2012 Olympic Games promotional materials.

You can also find me on the RED BUBBLE, FLICKR and FACEBOOK communities where much of my work is also displayed. I am always learning new skills and techniques and if you have any advice or comments about my work I would love to hear from you.
